Walmart Connect sets full-funnel sights on Amazon: Digiday

Walmart Connect has put Amazon's retail-media business in its crosshairs, declaring full-funnel ambition in a Digiday report. The headline is loud. The substance, in the available excerpt, is thin — and that gap is the story for practitioners.
The Digiday piece, titled "Walmart Connect's full-funnel ambitions come into focus, with Amazon in its sights," runs light on what practitioners need. No pricing. No named advertisers. No integration partners. No measurement methodology. No direct quotation from a Walmart Connect executive. What the headline promises and what the lede delivers are two different things.
What does "full funnel" actually buy a retailer?
In retail-media terms, full funnel means covering all four stages of the buyer journey:
- Awareness — display, video, connected TV, off-site
- Consideration — on-site sponsored products, search placements
- Conversion — closed-loop attribution tying ad exposure to purchase
- Loyalty — CRM retargeting, audience extension, post-purchase messaging
Amazon Ads has owned this stack since the Prime era. Walmart Connect's claim of parity is a claim — not yet a receipt.
What does Digiday's piece leave out?
Plenty. The skeptical investigator's checklist:
- Measurement parity. Can Walmart Connect tie closed-loop attribution to in-store Walmart purchases at the SKU level, the way Amazon Ads ties to Prime orders? The headline does not say.
- Off-site inventory. Does Walmart Connect buy third-party demand through DSPs like The Trade Desk or Yahoo, or run Walmart.com and Marketplace only? The full-funnel pitch implies the former. No confirmation either way.
- Advertiser uptake. How many of the top 100 CPG advertisers have moved meaningful budget from Amazon Ads to Walmart Connect? The piece names no one.
- Pricing transparency. Walmart Connect has historically avoided publishing CPM or CPC rates. Full-funnel ambition does not, on this evidence, change that.
What should a martech buyer actually do today?
Two things, before Walmart Connect or its agency partners publish more.
First, include Walmart Connect as a parallel buy to Amazon Ads in the next retail-media RFP — not as a "test us retail" media afterthought. If the network is genuinely full-funnel, it deserves a side-by-side test.
Second, hold both networks to the same measurement standard: same attribution window, same incrementality test design, same SKU-level granularity, same audit rights. Whatever Walmart Connect claims it can do, demand the spec sheet that proves it.
The caveat
Digiday's headline promises a roadmap. The available copy delivers a billboard. Practitioners reading the full piece should look for four things before believing the full-funnel pitch: named advertisers with disclosed spend shifts, CPM or CPC ranges, integration partners, and a measurement methodology Walmart Connect will defend in a contested attribution review. Without all four, "full-funnel" is a slogan. And slogans do not move media plans.
